Kuala Lumpur has one temperature and it does not change. What changes is how hard it rains and how many people are in the city, and both of those are plannable. This is every month scored, with the two weeks the city closes marked in advance.
Kuala Lumpur is around 32°C every day of the year and there is no real dry season. The variable is rain intensity, not temperature, and the wettest windows are April–May and October–November. Even then it is an afternoon storm, not a monsoon that cancels your day — front-load the outdoors before 11:00 and keep an indoor plan for 16:00 and the month barely matters. What does matter is balik kampung: at Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year the city empties as people go back to their home towns. Briefly glorious to photograph, and mostly shut.
There is no bad month, only a bad afternoon plan
If you are waiting for a dry season in Kuala Lumpur, you will wait forever. There is not one. Pick your dates around festivals and flight prices, and solve the weather with your daily schedule instead.
Kuala Lumpur is around 32°C every day of the year and it storms most afternoons between 16:00 and 18:00, hardest in April–May and October–November. Front-load anything outdoors before 11:00 and keep an indoor fallback for 16:00 — that single habit fixes most bad days here.
That is the whole weather strategy and it works in every month of the year. The difference between April and July is not whether it rains but how hard and for how long — an April storm can run two hours and put water over the kerbs, a July one often passes in forty minutes. Neither cancels a properly ordered day, because a properly ordered day has you inside the Islamic Arts Museum, a kopitiam or the 1.17km covered walkway at exactly that hour.
Haze is the one genuinely unpredictable factor and it is not on a schedule. It arrives with regional agricultural burning, usually somewhere between June and September, and in a bad year it flattens the skyline views you paid RM98 for. There is no way to book around it; there is a way to hedge, which is to not buy a tower ticket until you can see the towers.
The real planning variable is the calendar, not the sky. Two festivals empty this city completely and a third fills the malls — the dates are below, and they are worth building your flights around rather than discovering on arrival.

The dates that change what is open
Two festivals empty Kuala Lumpur and one national day closes its main square. These are the ones worth knowing before you book flights.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year are the two balik kampung weeks — the mass return to home towns. For a few days the city is emptier and quieter than at any other point in the year, which is genuinely something to see, and simultaneously a large share of the hawker stalls, family restaurants and small shops are closed. If you come at either, come for the emptiness and eat at hotels and chains, or do not come at all.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2027 falls on 10–11 March 2027. You will see 9–10 March quoted widely; it is wrong, because the crescent is below the horizon at Kuala Lumpur sunset on 8 March. Hari Raya Aidiladha 2027 is 17 May 2027. Deepavali 2027 is Thursday 28 October 2027, which is the best day of the year to be in Brickfields — Little India at Deepavali is one of the genuinely great free experiences in this city.
Merdeka Day is 31 August, the anniversary of the 1957 declaration of independence made at Stadium Merdeka, now underneath Merdeka 118. Expect Dataran Merdeka to be closed for rehearsals in the days beforehand and the whole area to be busy on the day itself.
During Ramadan, the Islamic Arts Museum closes at 17:00 rather than 18:00, and the Ramadan bazaars are the best-value eating of the year. Skip the hotel buffets at RM160–320 — the bazaar outside does the same food for around RM20, which is the clearest price gap in Malaysian hospitality.
One thing not to plan around: Formula 1 is not returning to Sepang. The last Malaysian Grand Prix was in 2017, and an August 2025 ministerial statement cited a hosting fee of around RM300 million a year that the government will not fund. Any site publishing a future Malaysian Grand Prix date is inventing it.
