take the cable car, skip the park.
It is a mall on a mountain and it is inside a cloud for most of the year. That sounds like a SKIP and it is not quite — because the cable car that gets you up there is one of the best-value rides in Malaysia and the only major attraction in the country that charges you exactly what it charges a Malaysian.
The Awana SkyWay is RM11 one way and RM19 return, it runs 07:00–23:00, and there is no dual pricing on it — you pay exactly what a Malaysian pays, which makes it a genuine outlier in a country where the foreigner surcharge runs to 180%. It is a long glass gondola ride up through rainforest to 1,800 metres, it stops at the Chin Swee Caves Temple on the way, and at around US$4.65 return it is one of the best-value rides in Malaysia. Genting SkyWorlds is the opposite call. RM168 online for a non-Malaysian against RM88 for a MyKad holder, RM198 if you walk up, RM65 child or senior, open 10:00–18:00 and closed Tuesdays — and the online rate needs at least a day's notice. The mountain is in cloud most of the year. A foggy afternoon turns RM168 into queueing in a wet cloud for rides you cannot see the top of.
The cable car is the attraction
Everything good about Genting happens between the bottom station and the top one. Above that you are in an air-conditioned retail and casino complex that could be anywhere, which is exactly what makes the ride worth separating from the destination.
Awana SkyWay: RM11 one way, RM19 return, 07:00 to 23:00. It is a gondola line climbing through genuine hill rainforest to around 1,800 metres, with glass-floored cabins on some services and a mid-station at the Chin Swee Caves Temple, a Taoist temple built into the hillside that most people ride straight past and should not. The ride is long, the forest below is real, and on a clear morning the view back down the valley is the best thing on this mountain.
And it does not charge you more for being foreign. That is worth saying plainly, because it is close to unique here. Petronas charges RM98 against RM35. Zoo Negara charges RM93 against RM48. The Awana SkyWay charges RM19 return to everybody, and at RM4.09 to the US dollar that is about US$4.65 for the single most scenic hour of transport in the Klang Valley.
Genting SkyWorlds is where the value collapses. RM168 for a non-Malaysian booking online — and the online rate needs at least one day's notice — RM198 if you turn up and buy at the gate, RM65 for a child or senior. It opens 10:00 to 18:00 and is closed on Tuesdays. A MyKad holder pays RM88 for the same wristband, which is a 91% gap.
The weather is the argument that settles it. Genting sits in cloud for a large part of the year, and an outdoor theme park in a wet cloud at 18°C is not a theme park — it is a queue with poor visibility. RM168 is real money to gamble on a mountain forecast an hour's drive away. If you are going, go early, watch the cloud, and be ready to spend the day in the malls instead.

This one mountain contains the widest and the narrowest foreigner-versus-local gaps you will meet on a Kuala Lumpur trip, roughly a hundred metres apart. It is the clearest illustration on the site of why you should always check which rate you are being quoted.

What to book, and what to buy at the station
Almost every ticketed attraction in Kuala Lumpur charges foreigners more than Malaysians — Petronas is RM98 against RM35, a 180% gap. Resellers headline the MyKad rate. Every price on this site is the non-MyKad rate you will actually pay, and the gate price sits next to the reseller price so you can see the markup.
Bus and cable car against a booked day tour
Genting is unusually easy to do yourself, because the two things worth doing are a scheduled bus and a scheduled cable car. Here is the whole day, in ringgit.
A mountain at 1,800 metres, a long glass gondola ride through hill rainforest, a Taoist temple carved into the hillside, and cool air — for about US$16 all in, on your own timetable, which means you can look at the cloud at 09:00 and cancel.
A vehicle, a guide, the cable car and usually a second stop such as Batu Caves. It removes the bus connection and adds narration. It does not remove the cloud, and it commits you to the day before you can see the weather.
Check tour pricesVerdict. Do it yourself, and keep the RM168 in your pocket. RM64 gets you the bus, the cable car, the temple and lunch — the tour costs two to seven times that for the same mountain plus a driver. The one thing worth paying for up here is flexibility, and DIY is the version that has it: you can look at the forecast at 08:00 and go to Batu Caves instead. If you want a day trip that reliably beats doing it yourself, that is Kuala Selangor, not this.

Take the Aerobus from the city to the Awana SkyWay bottom station — roughly US$2.45 — then the cable car up. About an hour each way. Do not hire a car: foreigners pay RM3.62–3.82 a litre for fuel against RM1.99 for MyKad holders under BUDI95, which makes self-drive irrational here.

Cool — around 18°C, which is the appeal after 32°C in the city — and cloudy for much of the year. Check the mountain forecast before you commit RM168 to an outdoor theme park, because a foggy afternoon up there is queueing in a wet cloud.
What is Chin Swee Caves Temple?
A Taoist temple built into the hillside at the mid-station of the Awana SkyWay, with a pagoda and a large statue looking out over the valley. Most visitors ride straight past it, and it is the most interesting thing on the mountain that is not a shop.
Is Genting a good day trip from Kuala Lumpur?
